Wube Software has moved Factorio 2.1 to a stable release, adding flippable pumpjacks, mixed-item rockets and direct cargo transfers between orbiting space platforms, Inven Global reported. It is the last major update the game will get.
Wube announced the stable build on 23 October through its developer blog, Friday Facts. Players have been able to try 2.1 in experimental form since June. PC Gamer ran the news under a headline counting 14 years of development.
Base-Game Changes in Factorio 2.1
Most of the update is refinement of existing systems rather than new content. Pumpjacks and burner mining drills, which were awkward to reorient, can now be flipped.
Circuit networks now use different coloured wires to separate inputs from outputs. Pipes once again stop different fluids from mixing.
Wube also touched up the graphics for assembling machines, oil refineries and rocket silos. Enemy expansion mechanics and some combat systems were rebalanced.
Space Age Logistics Overhaul
The Space Age expansion, released in 2024, gets the biggest set of changes. A single rocket can now carry a mix of item types.
Space platforms in orbit can pass goods directly to one another. New unloading facilities pull cargo straight from landing pads.
Flight performance now depends on a platform's mass instead of its width. That moves away from earlier designs that favoured long, narrow ships.
Wube has also separated the quality mechanics from the expansion. Players can run Space Age with the quality system switched off.
What Wube Does Next
Wube said in a May blog post that 2.1 would be the final major update. The studio judged that Factorio's overall design and progression were complete. No required core features were left to add.
Support continues, and Wube will keep handling bug fixes, platform compatibility and modding support over the long term.
Some Wube staff are already building prototypes for new titles. They are also working on experimental projects, Inven Global reported.
Factorio is a factory-building game in which players mine resources on alien planets. They link production lines into large automated factories. It entered Early Access in 2016 and reached full release in 2020.
