Vampire Crawlers: The Turbo Wildcard is a spin-off of the Vampire Survivors franchise. While the mainline series is a shoot ’em up roguelike, the spin-off deviates from that genre to bring players a completely new experience. It was co-developed by Poncle and Nosebleed Interactive and published by Poncle.
Why Vampire Survivors fans may want to check out Vampire Crawlers
While the spin-off might be a distinct genre from the mainline games, it still keeps the game’s vibe and soul alive. Vampire Crawlers takes characters, concepts, and weapons from the original game and inserts them into a deck-building system. However, it swaps out the game’s pace and structure for a turn-based combat system, which might not translate the main game’s core mechanics well. Yet, somehow, Poncle makes it work in more ways than one.
The game takes a dungeon-crawling approach to gameplay, with players having to clear five floors to complete a run, rather than lasting thirty minutes against a horde.
Given that a map for the floors is always available to the player, they can plot the course that they are going to take with the tools that they have on hand. Each run encourages players to experiment, allowing them to adjust their decks and strategies as they progress through the various floors.
While Survivors and Crawlers share the same basic principles in gameplay, Crawlers makes its loop a little more deliberate, requiring a bit more concentration than the mainline game. However, this is a strength, as it invites players to delve deeper into a system they already know, giving them more agency and bonuses based on their experience.
