Touhou 6 Remake ‘Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic’ Launches on Steam With Original

Alliance Arts, ZUN, and Shanghai Alice Reprise have announced that their shmup Touhou Koumakyou: New Classic – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is available now for PC via Steam for $17.99.

This release rebuilds 2002’s Touhou Koumakyou – the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, better known as Touhou 6, while also including a recreation of the original game.

The game is sold as a bundle that includes New Classic and the separate Classic version, so you can’t buy the latter individually. The Classic version is also only in Japanese.

Players control Reimu Hakurei or Marisa Kirisame as they investigate the Scarlet Mist Incident in Gensokyo. Each character has different shot options, while bombs provide limited-use special attacks and Focus Mode slows movement for more precise positioning through dense bullet patterns.

The remake raises the game’s resolution and redraws its pixel artwork. ZUN has also personally rearranged every piece of background music for the new release. An additional mode provides unlimited lives.

A Deluxe Edition is also available and includes a soundtrack containing over 30 tracks. The selection combines music from the original 2002 Touhou Koumakyou with the rearranged and newly written music featured in New Classic.
